People are ignorant of health care choices for the same reason that many have continued to be ignorant of their retirement options--they have been allowed, no encouraged to let someone else take care of it for them--for better or worse.

Need a nest egg for retirement? Let the government take the money out of your check every month and keep it until you get to be 65, no wait 66, no wait until, oops there is no money there left. Sorry ol' boy, you should have been watching your money closer.

Same thing with health care...need a referral? Your primary care physician makes the call based on who your insurance will play ball with. And there you are with a pig in a poke. Oh, and the bill? Don't worry about it...you only have to pay this much and the rest will be "handled" by insurance. The consumer doesn't care about anything unless he is RESPONSIBLE for it--making the decision or writing the check.

Nobody wants to make a decision when they are in a medical emergency, but there needs to be more willingness on the consumer's part to be pro-active in making medical decisions and quit depending on insurance or government nannies.

I don't see why people who seek it can't be trusted with more information. And it's a doubly dubious comment to be coming from someone who appears to gather and provide information (and no tangible good or necessary service) for a living. I wonder if he asks co-workers or friends for doctor recommendations, or if the name of his new GP just comes to him in a dream.
